Amy takes on many challenging assignments, but one she finds especially tough is working with clients to help them understand the importance of not engaging in further conflict with their spouse. “It’s a natural reaction to want to defend yourself when you’re going through a divorce,” says Amy, “but in this job, I see how vital it is to stop engaging in conflict that keeps the case from settling.”
Meet Amy
If you find an uncluttered desk at Cape Fear Family Law, you have likely found Amy Burge’s desk. One of her biggest strengths is organization. She is Janet’s right hand, and one of her many jobs is trial preparation. She requests hundreds of documents from clients and counsel, and then assists Janet and the other attorneys in organizing them for trial.
Amy is also integral in scheduling and maintaining court dates. If you want a go to person to confirm that you are (or are not) on the court calendar, she is your contact. Amy writes a number of letters each day to ensure that communication is maintained, especially in litigation cases which can feel like they take an eternity to resolve. She learned early on that if you can keep the attorneys talking that the case is likely to settle quicker and with better outcomes for both sides of the conflict. Amy assists clients in reviewing their financial records and organizing them to ensure that they can share this information with the attorneys in a quick and meaningful way.

When asked how she knows she has done a good job, Amy stated, “Most of the cases we see involve children. They are the top priority. When things work out best for the children, I feel we have the best possible outcome.” Amy, a mother of two grown boys, plays in the local Dart League and cheers on the Miami Dolphins during football season. She may have the cleanest house on the planet, according to her colleagues, despite the number of pets she has at any given time. She spent much of her childhood in Homestead, Florida. The Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord is another of Amy’s favorite places. She loves the noise and crowds of NASCAR.
Amy joined Cape Fear Family Law nearly four years ago as a paralegal and earned her paralegal certificate in May of 2012. She attended school locally in Wilmington and passed the State Bar’s Board of Paralegal Certification Exam. As a young woman she immersed herself in psychology courses, an interest that found an outlet in the bartending she still occasionally does.
