“If you needed help, working with Matt meant that you were heard, your issues were addressed, and outcomes were reached. This guy never stopped. We’re still pretty sure he was an actual superhero.”
Remembering Matthew
Work Hard, Play Hard
Matthew never did get around to picking his own hero name — submissions were accepted daily, and he kept us waiting right to the end. The truth is he never needed one. Balancing big goals and hard work, Matt was no stranger to perseverance, and he carried it into everything. He worked diligently for his clients, always with a sincere approach. After practicing primarily in criminal law with the Law Offices of Paul Mediratta, Matt was approached by Cape Fear Family Law — we’d noticed that work ethic from a mile off — and he decided to try his hand at family law. He was eager to learn, straight-forward, and genuinely funny. When Matt wasn’t lawyering it up, you could find him on Oak Island, on the beach with his dog, Murphy. Those Brunswick County beaches always brought his hero side to the surface. He was a crazed Mountaineers fan, though in fairness he’d watch any sport going, loved to fish, and was a devoted believer in chicken wings. (I mean — is it even possible to watch a football game without wings?)
Influenced by His Heroes
Matthew — who almost always went by “Matt” — was the kind of person who jumped in to help those in need. He came from a long line of excellence, and he was the first to credit the heroes in his own family. He was highly influenced by his uncle, also an attorney, and recalled how his uncle took an active interest in helping people through major life issues. Matt was captivated by the complexity of those cases, found a second-hand sense of purpose in them, and eventually decided to pursue law himself. His parents were among his most important influences. Selfless, hard-working, and supportive, Matt always said they had put their own needs last to make sure their kids had what they needed.
Matthew grew up in Huntington, WV, alongside his younger sister Rachel, before moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2014. In high school he played baseball, learned a real work ethic at Kroger and Michael’s Arts and Crafts, and loved watching games with his friends and family.
And no — he did not marry his cousin after high school (he’d never have let us skip the West Virginia joke, so we’re keeping it for him). Instead, Matthew earned a BS in Business Management from West Virginia University. You know what that means — Let’s go ‘Eers! — a Mountaineer for life. During college he worked at a t-shirt shop and as a receptionist at a law firm, but nothing could deter him from becoming an attorney. He moved to Raleigh in 2014, attended Campbell University, and was admitted to the bar in 2017. During law school he interned for several criminal defense attorneys and the Wake County Public Defender’s Office. Matt always found the funny parallels between family and criminal law — I mean, come on, how often do you get a stolen-dog case between two spouses?
Those With Kryptonite Need Not Apply
A day in the life of Matthew started early — up to walk Murphy on the beach, then getting dapper in his favorite suit-and-tie ensemble, podcasts on the commute, a full day of managing client issues and expectations, court, and dinner with his friends at the end of it. A modern-day hero who knew how to clock out and enjoy his evening.
If you needed help, working with Matt meant that you were heard, your issues were addressed, and outcomes were reached. This guy never stopped. We’re still pretty sure he was an actual superhero — and we’ll miss him more than these words can hold.
