Mecklenburg County sits in the southwestern Piedmont of North Carolina, right on the South Carolina line. It borders Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, and Union counties in North Carolina, plus Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina.

Formed in 1762 from Anson County and named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the county has a population of about 1.2 million — the second-most populous in North Carolina.
