Jones County sits in the southeastern Coastal Plain of North Carolina, bordered by Craven County to the north and east, Onslow County to the south, and Duplin and Lenoir counties to the west. It’s a small, very rural county of about 470 square miles with forests, farmland, and wetlands.
The county seat is Trenton, a tiny town of about 250 residents. The largest community is Maysville, with roughly 850 people (a small portion of the town extends into Onslow County). The only other incorporated town is Pollocksville, with around 270 residents.
Most of the county’s population of approximately 9,500 lives in unincorporated rural areas. There are only three incorporated towns total, and the rest of the county consists of scattered small communities and countryside. It remains one of the least populous and most rural counties in North Carolina, with a quiet, agricultural character.
