Capturing What Matters

Every photographer knows the secret to a perfect image: it’s not just about what you see. It’s about light, timing, patience, and an eye trained to notice what others miss.

Sarah Winkler brings that same rare sensibility to her work at Cape Fear Family Law. For just over four years now, she has been the steady hand at Wilmington headquarters—catching details before they become problems, guiding colleagues before they get lost, and quietly ensuring that every case moves forward the way it should.

We are honored to announce that Sarah L. Winkler is the recipient of Cape Fear Family Law’s 2025 Most Supportive Team Member Award—recognizing the person who serves as the firm’s go-to collaborator, who provides high-value support to attorneys and staff alike, and who consistently closes the gaps that would otherwise let things fall through.

The Art of Seeing Everything

There’s a reason Sarah is known as the firm’s “Divorce Queen.”

Sarah has single-handedly saved countless divorces from mistakes that would have derailed or delayed them. She catches the missing signature, the misfiled document, the deadline that’s about to slip. She sees the whole picture—every case, every status, every next step—and she makes sure nothing escapes.

When it comes to automations and systems, Sarah has been Janet’s partner in building the workflows that help the firm operate at scale. She learned. She adapted. She embraced it all. That’s not someone who’s afraid of technology. That’s someone who understands it.

21 Years, Then a Leap of Faith

Sarah spent 21 years and 5 months at her previous firm—up until the day her former boss retired. Two decades of loyalty, dedication, and consistency. When that chapter closed, she didn’t just find another job. She found a bonus family member or two.

“It’s like a family here. I love it,” she says. She started in January 2022, and in less than four years, she has become the anchor of the Wilmington office. And somewhere in there? She earned her paralegal certification. Because she wasn’t going to just coast on two decades of experience. She wanted to be officially, certifiably excellent.

What Her Colleagues Say

  • Ashley Owens: “For being the real MVP.”
  • Granger Benson: “For keeping all of my divorces moving along.” #DivorceQueen
  • Kara Tucker: “Thank you for teaching me stuff and guiding me every day.” #knowledgeable
  • Allie Moore: “For helping me secure a HUGE WIN in my most difficult case. I wish I had 1,000 points!”
  • Janet Gemmell (CEO): “You’re a godsend.”

The Technology Guru

Her previous firm was “super old-school—everything was pen and paper.” But when Sarah came to Cape Fear Family Law, she didn’t resist the change. She embraced it. E-filing? She mastered it and now teaches others. Automations? She’s Janet’s right hand in building them. The firm recognized her repeatedly as a #technologyguru—and that’s not a hashtag given lightly.

2025 Most Supportive Team Member

A Wilmington Native with an Artist’s Eye

Sarah is Wilmington through and through. Born and raised here. Graduated from New Hanover High School. Built her career in this community. Comes to work every weekday in Wilmington now and marvels at the changes over her lifetime.

And on weekends? She’s at Wrightsville Beach catching the sunrise. Or Carolina Beach catching the sunset. Sometimes both on the same day.

“I love nature photography and landscapes,” Sarah says. That photographer’s eye—the one that catches the perfect light at dawn—is the same eye that catches the details in every case file, every document, every filing deadline.

The Perfect Frame

In photography, composition is everything. The best photographers know how to frame a shot so that every element works together to create something meaningful. Sarah Winkler does that for Cape Fear Family Law.

She frames the work so that nothing falls through the cracks. She positions herself wherever she’s needed most. She catches the details that make the difference between good and excellent.

Sarah L. Winkler is our 2025 Most Supportive Team Member.

She is knowledgeable. She is special. She is exactly where she belongs—at and as the heart of this firm, holding everything together with the same quiet excellence she brings to every sunrise she captures. Congratulations, Sarah. Thank you for everything you see—and everything you do.
