Long before she stepped into a courtroom, Allison Leahy worked as a paddleboard and kayak tour guide, helping people navigate unfamiliar, unpredictable waters with a steady hand and a clear eye.
As the daughter of a U.S. Coast Guard officer, moving around and adapting to new environments was second nature to Allison growing up as a military child. That upbringing taught her how to stay grounded when the landscape shifts—a skill that served her well when she impulsively moved 10 hours away to attend college in a state where she didn’t know a single soul.
Today, Allison brings that exact same adaptability and calm focus to her work as a Junior Associate Attorney at Cape Fear Family Law in Jacksonville. When clients walk through her door facing divorce, child custody decisions, or legal separation, they are often experiencing one of the most disorienting chapters of their lives. Allison doesn’t offer empty platitudes or tell people whatever they want to hear just to make them feel good in the moment. Deep Roots in Legal Advocacy & Service
Allison’s calling toward the legal profession came early during her undergraduate years at Auburn University. After taking her very first pre-law class, she had a clear lightbulb moment: this was the exact career path meant for her. She went on to graduate cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Leadership Studies. Driven by a deep commitment to service, she actively led student organizations against human trafficking and earned inductions into several national academic and leadership honor societies.
She earned her Juris Doctor on an academic scholarship from Campbell University School of Law in Raleigh, where she engaged deeply with Women in Law and the Environmental Law Society. Wanting to broaden her perspective on international legal frameworks, she also pursued an advanced Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Legal Studies through Nottingham-Trent University.
Prior to joining Cape Fear Family Law, Allison built a hands-on foundation in advocacy and community service. She served as a paralegal with the Legal Aid Society in New York, helping individuals navigate emergency housing during the pandemic, and worked as a certified legal intern at the Blanchard Community Law Clinic. She also honed her legal research, drafting, and client evaluation skills working on domestic relations and civil litigation with North Carolina law firms. These experiences reinforced her belief in the collaborative, supportive culture she now enjoys at Cape Fear Family Law.
Life Beyond the Courtroom
If Allison weren’t practicing family law, her natural drive to care for people in critical moments likely would have led her toward a career in neonatal nursing. But outside the office, she keeps her life filled with joyful, low-stress routines.
Her ideal, happy Saturday involves spending quality time with family and friends, playing a match of tennis, or walking her dog, Buddy. You can also frequently find her at the beach with a good book in hand. If she could instantly become an expert in any obscure sport overnight, she’d pick ice skating. And while her past travels have taught her the hard way that overpacking is a trap, her motto remains simple and effective: always pack light, but also be prepared.
