In a firm filled with exceptional attorneys, earning recognition as a Client Champion is no small feat. Earning that recognition as a Junior Associate Attorney? That’s extraordinary. This year, Cape Fear Family Law is proud to recognize Marcus Tingling as the 2025 Runner-Up for the Client Champion Attorney Award—a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about his dedication, skill, and the profound impact he has made in such a short time.
Marcus demonstrates rapid growth, high responsiveness, strong client relationships, and increasing profitability. He is emerging as a top performer and leader within our firm—and the families he serves are the beneficiaries of his exceptional care. Clients champion Marcus too by granting him five star reviews on Google all throughout the year.
Four Generations of Legal Excellence
For Marcus Tingling, the law isn’t just a profession—it’s a family legacy. With a heritage spanning four generations in the legal field, Marcus brings not only technical expertise but a deep, inherited understanding of what it means to serve others through the practice of law.
Before attending law school, Marcus laid a strong foundation through academic excellence, graduating with honors and earning dual degrees in Psychology and Business Administration. This unique combination gives him an edge in family law—where understanding both the emotional dynamics of family disputes and the practical business implications of legal decisions is essential.
Though he explored various industries early in his career, Marcus’s personal experiences and desire for justice ultimately led him to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an attorney. It was Cape Fear Family Law recognizing his legal ability and chasing him through the halls of NCCU School of Law that led him to practicing family law, an arena in which he is gains daily experience. That calling has proven to be exactly where he belongs.
Durham’s Champion in the Courtroom
Marcus doesn’t just work in Durham County—he lives there, raises his new baby boy there in his home, and fights for his clients there every single day. His deep connection to the Triangle region, serving Durham, Chatham, and Orange counties, means he’s not just an attorney passing through the courthouse. He’s a neighbor, a community member, and a tireless advocate for the families who call this area home.
Whether navigating the complexities of divorce, fighting for fair custody arrangements, negotiating child support agreements, or handling other family law matters, Marcus approaches every case with what he calls a “seize the day” attitude—combined with genuine empathy for clients during the most challenging moments of their lives.
His commitment to client service has been recognized consistently throughout 2025. As CEO Janet L. Gemmell noted when praising Marcus for his integrity: “Your daddy taught you right.” High praise indeed from the firm’s leader—and a testament to the values Marcus brings to every client interaction.

A Year of Exceptional Performance
Throughout 2025, Marcus has consistently exceeded expectations and earned praise from teammates across the organization. The numbers and accolades paint a clear picture of an attorney on the rise:
- Jessica Arthur recognized Marcus repeatedly for handling significant issues back-to-back in Court in a single week—an exceptional achievement for any attorney, let alone a junior associate. Week after week, he’s appeared on the firm’s top performers list with hashtags like #gettingitdone, #rockstars, and #killingit.
- Adrian Davis, the firm’s Chief of Operations, praised Marcus for “helping with an adoption case and slaying your KPIs” as well as always “going above and beyond” for his clients.
- Janet L. Gemmell celebrated his “GOAT-level achievements” and “killing the game for real,” and separately recognized him for getting a “smooth report done in a GAL case” that was #fast and #efficient.
- Waneta Ellis praised him for “knowing what needed to be done, reaching out, and getting it right!”
- Guadalupe Guevara gave Marcus a shoutout for “answering faster than Lightning McQueen!”—a perfect summary of the responsiveness that sets Marcus apart.
- Lisa recognized Marcus for his mentorship, saying, “What would I do without your mentoring on E-Filing!”
- Melissa Bradnick thanked Marcus, along with senior attorneys, for “always reviewing my work and providing helpful feedback and guidance.”
Committed to Continuous Growth
What makes Marcus truly exceptional is his relentless pursuit of improvement. Throughout 2025, he gained the benefit of traveling alongside CEO Janet Gemmell and other team members to invest in his professional development. His commitment to growth has included business conferences, continuing legal education classes, and communication and sales training—all designed to make him a more effective negotiator and advocate for his clients.
His POD team (the legal team within the office he works with daily) has also been recognized for excellence. At the firm’s Spring Fling, Purple POD—including Marcus—took the lead in awards, earning praise from the CEO for being “On Fire,” “ready for the challenge,” and “winning.” Later in the year, Marcus transitioned to Teal POD, where Jessica Arthur declared them “the dream team” ready to “roll into the new year like the bosses we are.” [Hint Hint – the CEO herself is in the Teal POD]
A Heart for Service Beyond the Courtroom
Marcus’s commitment to service extends far beyond his legal practice. Every six months, he volunteers to help provide meals at a local homeless shelter. He also dedicates time each year to volunteer on Martin Luther King Jr. Day—reflecting his deep belief in service to others and his community.
When he’s not advocating for families in the courtroom or serving his community, you might find Marcus cheering on the Knicks or Yankees—he’s a passionate sports fan who brings the same intensity to game day that he brings to trial preparation. And if you ever want to take him out to dinner, just know: the man could eat snapper every single day if given the choice.

If he could give his younger self advice today, Marcus says it would be simple: “Enjoy the day and your current moments.” That philosophy—that appreciation for the present moment—is exactly what makes him such an effective advocate. He doesn’t just go through the motions; he is fully present for his clients, his team, and his community.
A Milestone Year
2025 has been a year of professional triumph for Marcus—but also one of profound personal joy. In August, Marcus and his family welcomed a new baby, surrounded by an outpouring of congratulations and support from his Cape Fear Family Law teammates. Waneta Ellis’s words captured the firm’s excitement perfectly: “Cheers to the next generation!”
Balancing the demands of a growing legal career with new parenthood is no small task, but Marcus has handled it with the same grace and determination he brings to everything else—continuing to perform at an exceptional level while embracing this new chapter of fatherhood. He has a new found understanding of any father’s role in each of their children’s lives and understands the value of a custody award for a dad.
