Attorney at Law
Jessica is particularly gratified when she sees her clients and their children emerge from this difficult time with a fresh start and sense of hope.
“It is amazing to see a parent get a second chance and run with it,” says Jessica. “A good outcome is when a family is able to move forward and find a good schedule for their children, especially when both parents agree to put the children first.”
Something apparent about each member of Cape Fear Family Law is a clear, underlying need to help others. Family Law Attorney Jessica Arthur is no exception. She entered law school already passionate about family law, which is not the typical focus of first-year law students.
She says it came from her working with a young boy at summer camp in high school. The boy had Muscular Dystrophy, and they got along so well she was hired by his mother to watch him after school. The parents had previously divorced and Jessica observed how his family struggled to deal with all of the challenges associated with divorce. This experience instilled in her a desire to help families like his and led her to pursue family law. Jessica stays in contact with him and his family to this day.
First shadowing Janet in the spring of 2013, Jessica was hired in May after being admitted to practice law in North Carolina. Janet regards Jessica as a “great litigator.” Among this and other attributes, her biggest strengths are her honesty and her ability to manage expectations. It is important for clients so that each has a clear picture of what to expect throughout the process. She is an excellent resource through the conflict of divorce and custody.
Embracing Balance and the “Big Blue”
If you hear “Go Big Blue” in the firm’s halls, it must be basketball season. Jessica is a hardcore University of Kentucky fan, so please don’t bring up the Louisville Cardinals. If it is football season you will likely see a lot of black and gold as she cheers on the Steelers. She dotes on three nephews, whom she says have her “wrapped around their little fingers.” Despite a busy work schedule, she tries to find balance in her life with her husband, also an attorney, two dogs named Boo and Amelia, a contrary turtle, travel, movies, and a regular “Boot Camp” workout after a long day.
Not Afraid to Follow Her Dreams
Jessica was born in Alabama, but moved to Kentucky and later Pennsylvania with her family. After visiting East Carolina University, she fell in love with the eastern part of North Carolina. So she packed up, not knowing a soul and followed her heart. While studying in Greenville, she decided she was ready for another adventure and studied abroad in Konstanz, Germany. While living there for nine months, she reveled in her ability to constantly be surrounded by history. She would walk to Switzerland so frequently that the border patrol knew her by name.
Jessica attained a law degree from the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia, and was then admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 2013.
